Menopause 101

Menopause isn't one moment. It's usually a decade or more.

The phases below can span 20+ years, and the symptoms change as you move through them.

Perimenopause

Often starting in your late 30s or early 40s. Symptoms include hot flashes, poor sleep, anxiety, mood swings, and brain fog, among others.

Menopause

12 months after your last period. Night sweats and vaginal dryness arrive alongside the same symptoms as before.

Post-menopause

The years that follow. Some symptoms ease, and bone, heart, and brain health become important to monitor.

Most providers treat one symptom at a time. Maven connects the dots.

Menopause symptoms affect different systems throughout the body, so people often bounce from specialist to specialist, waiting weeks between visits. Without anyone finding the root cause.

Maven brings care together in one virtual clinic, with menopause-certified specialists available the same day or next day. Members get symptom guidance, treatment — including hormone therapy when clinically appropriate — and ongoing care as needs change.

The result: After three months on Maven, 92% of members report a reduction in the severity of at least one menopause symptom.

How do I know if my employer offers Maven?

Most people find out through their benefits portal or an email from HR. You can also check with your HR team or reach out to support@mavenclinic.com to confirm. If you find out that your employer doesn't offer Maven yet, you can tell HR that you're interested, or sign up now on your own.

Can I use Maven for menopause without an employer benefit?

Yes. Maven offers hormone and midlife care directly to individuals, with a personalized care plan built around your symptoms and history and pay-as-you-go access to specialists across the clinic.

How much does Maven menopause cost?

That depends on how you're accessing Maven. If your employer or health plan offers Maven, your costs are fully covered. If you're purchasing Maven on your own, you get two virtual visits with a hormone health specialist for $150. Additional appointments with specialists and medications are on a pay-as-you-go basis. Find out more on the Maven hormone therapy page.

Does Maven prescribe hormone therapy?

Yes, Maven prescribes HRT when it's clinically appropriate. Prescriptions are not offered through every Maven benefit plan. When they are, a Maven provider reviews your symptoms and history with you and walks through your options, including hormone therapy and the alternatives.

About 40% of members who have a hormone therapy consultation choose a different route. Among members who start hormone therapy through Maven, 90% report improved symptoms. If you have Maven through your employer or health plan, prescribing can be part of the program. Please check your plan details to confirm what yours includes.

What does Maven menopause care include?

Maven is the only care model that takes a holistic, whole-person approach to menopause care. Members can have virtual appointments 24/7/365 across 30+ provider types, including OB-GYNs, mental health providers, physical therapists, nutritionists, and career coaches, plus guidance on treatment options. Treatment is personalized to each individual's health history and goals and can include hormone therapy and other medication prescriptions where clinically appropriate, as well as referrals to in-person care.

Members with Maven through an employer or health plan also get on-demand classes, community forums, and a library of clinically-reviewed articles and videos.

What's the difference between perimenopause and menopause?

Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause. Hormones fluctuate unpredictably during this phase, which is why symptoms can feel inconsistent and hard to pin down. Menopause is the point at which you've gone twelve consecutive months without a period. Symptoms often begin during perimenopause and continue past it.

What impact does menopause have on employer care costs?

Without coordinated care, employees often see multiple providers across endocrinology, gynecology, mental health, and primary care before getting a clear answer, delaying relief and driving up the cost of the diagnostic process before treatment even starts. This results in average claims costs of $2,100 per employee.

What impact does menopause have on retention and productivity?

Menopause symptoms directly affect work. Women report that they struggle to concentrate, miss deadlines, and 34% of all midlife employees have considered stepping back or leaving their jobs due to unmanaged symptoms.

Because of the impact menopause has on employee health and productivity, studies suggest that the impact of untreated and undertreated menopausal symptoms cost employers over $26.6 billion annually in the U.S. alone, and over $150 billion worldwide.

What care paths are available?

Care plans are individualized based on each member's symptoms, health history, goals, and comfort level with treatment. Maven's Menopause & Midlife Health program offers:

  • Hormone therapy when clinically appropriate.
  • Non-hormonal care, including other prescription options and guidance on sleep, exercise, and nutrition.
  • Mental health support for anxiety and mood changes.
  • Peer communities to chat with others who get it.
  • Lifestyle and career coaching for changes that affect daily life and work.

Members can connect with experts across 30+ specialties, including menopause-certified OB-GYNs, nutritionists, physical therapists, sex therapists, mental health providers, and career coaches.
